When it comes to skincare routines, most people know the benefits of moisturising daily and using a cleanser before bed. But if there’s one product that’s likely to be overlooked it’s the humble skin toner. In fact, you’d be far from alone if you’ve found yourself asking what a toner actually does and if you need to use one in the first place. We’ll we’re here to put the record straight by telling you exactly what your sensitive skin stands to gain by using one of the beauty world’s most underestimated products.
What Does a Toner Do?
A toner restores your skin’s natural PH balance and makes sure your pores are completely clear. It does this by removing any excess oil, make-up or dead skin cells which can remain on the skin even after you’ve washed your face. It will even pick up any residue that’s been left behind from your cleanser. By removing all these impurities that contribute to clogged pores, you reduce your chances of getting blackheads and can keep acne breakouts out bay. And by shrinking the appearance of pores, the toner can help prevent signs of aging too.
Toners are also super hydrating as the liquid can be quickly absorbed by the skin. Which means instant, fresh-faced results. This extra moisture is just what skin with conditions like eczema and psoriasis needs to stop it drying out and experiencing flare ups. Just make sure you choose one that’s suitable for sensitive skin.
When and How Should You Use a Toner?
Using skin toner couldn’t be simpler. First, use your cleanser as normal. Then simply squeeze some of the toner liquid onto a reusable bamboo pad and gently wipe it over your face or anywhere else you’re prone to breakouts like your shoulders, chest and back. Then apply your usual daily moisturiser. Try to follow this three-step process both at the start of the day and before you go to bed. In the morning, your toner acts as a great primer before you apply your make-up. Whilst at night, it thoroughly cleanses your skin after a day’s worth of build-up.
What Type of Toners Are Best for Sensitive Skin?
Those with sensitive skin should avoid toners that contain alcohol as this will dry out the skin and cause irritation. Opt for water-based products like Nota Bene’s organic chamomile & geranium toner instead.
This is one of our favourite toners as the combination of geranium water and orange blossom reduces damage to the skin’s elastin fibers whilst providing a much-needed hit of hydration. It also has a refreshingly sweet aroma that will give both your mood and skin an uplifting boost.
And if that wasn’t enough, the Nota Bene toner also contains the ultimate must-have ingredient for sensitive skin: Aloe Vera. The cooling properties of this wonder plant can sooth inflammation, combat rashes, soreness and even infection. Which has got to be enough to make sure you never think about skipping your toner again!
