The Best Pre and Post Workout Skincare Routine for Sensitive Skin

Regular exercise can help get rid of toxins and rejuvenate tired looking skin. But all that sweat can have more negative consequences if you don’t look after your skin both before and after you hit the gym. Because heavy perspiration mixed with shared equipment can spread bacteria that can cause breakouts of acne, eczema and other troublesome skin complaints. But don’t worry. There’s no need to skip your regular fitness sessions so long as you follow these top tips.

Skip the Make-Up

As daunting as it may be for those who love a gym selfie, it’s always best to workout with a fresh, make-up free face. That’s because not wearing make-up allows your skin to breath and you don’t run the risk of clogging your open pores as your body heats up.

Tie-up Your Hair

Having your hair over your face can lead to excess oil and rogue hair product clogging your pores as you sweat. To avoid this, tie back your hair so it’s well out of your face before you start to exercise. Hair ties are better than headbands which can trap sweat and cause acne breakouts around your hairline.

Pack The Right Towel

Using a towel provided by your gym might save you a bit of space in your gym bag but can you be sure how and when it was cleaned? If they don’t use washing powder or detergent formulated for sensitive skin it could cause dryness or worse, an allergic reaction. So, make sure you always pack your own from home.

Choose a towel of medium thickness that isn’t too fluffy. That way there's less chance of bacteria lurking in the fibers (which is possible even after washes). Then make sure you pop it in the wash after every use.

Hit The Shower As Soon As Possible

Washing away sweat as quickly as possible is the best way to protect your skin post-workout. Products like Suds’ calendula soap are great for those with sensitive skin as calendula oil has been proven to contain antifungal, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial properties that make it ideal for washing away impurities after a sweaty gym session. Or there’s Naturally Tribal’s OROMA Body Wash containing Orange and Eucalyptus antioxidants for those who’d prefer something in a handy bottle. Then be sure to pat rather than rub the skin with your towel to lock in the moisture when you dry off.

Cleanse, Tone and Moisturise

On top of showering, you should also take a small pack of essentials with you that will help you pay special attention to cleansing your face to remove stubborn residue or grease. Opt for a product that can be gently applied and wiped off using a warm muslin cloth like Nota Bene’s organic bergamot & chamomile cleanser. Then apply their organic chamomile & geranium toner using an antifungal bamboo pad to cool and hydrate your face. Finally, use any one of our expert moisturisers or body butters to leave your skin smooth and supple.
